4 Secrets to Get Your Child to Sleep

Most parents struggle with getting their children to sleep at some time or another, but it is particularly difficult when school routines start up again after a period of rest during the festive season, it can be a complete nightmare!

But while it can be tempting to let bad behavior slide, over-tiredness can create a whole host of problems the following day! Sleep deprivation and children do not mix particularly well, so it is super important for your little ones to get as much shut-eye as possible.

But how do you achieve that when your child refuses to sleep?

1. Keep to a routine

Children are creatures of habit and the moment that their routines are disrupted it can throw their sleep patterns into complete disarray! Stick to your routine, no matter what, to avoid any over tiredness the following day.

This also applies to waking up – the longer you let them sleep in, the later they will want to go to bed that night.

2. Avoid TV and tablets

The blue light from electronic devices can actually trick our body clocks into thinking that it’s not yet night time which in turn interferes with the production of melatonin, the sleep hormone.

Avoid letting your child use any electronic devices for at least 2 hours before they go to bed, instead give them a relaxing bath and read them stories to send them to sleep.

3. Keep them cool

Studies have shown that our bodies are much better at sleeping when our environments are cooler, so keep the heating in your little one’s room on low and avoid wrapping them up in too many blankets.

4. Create a relaxing environment

Playing gentle lullabies in the background, dimming the lights to a soft glow and quietening down the rest of the household should lull your child into a sleepy state.

A few drops of lavender essential oil in a diffuser is another great way to get your child to relax and drop off to sleep – just don’t leave them unsupervised with it and always turn electrical items off before bedtime.
